Sox up 3-1
There's certainly nothing lucky about the last two White Sox victories, they've outplayed The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at every facet of the game. The starting pitching has been outstanding, the defense has been solid, and they're hitting in the clutch. Just a masterful performance all around. Good job.
Not to beat a dead horse here, but last night I watched the game from a bar and the place was dead. There were about 20 people there, and maybe five of them were openly cheering for the White Sox. We went to a different place and the same thing. Where the hell is everybody? Both places should have been hopping. It's certainly no secret that the Sox are in the postseason, because the media push has been massive. Watching the local news telecasts is like viewing the world through Hawk Harrelson's eyes. Go-Go-Sox, all the time. The papers are devoting 10-20 pages a day to the most extreme minutia of all things Sox. When it comes down to it, though, this town simply doesn't care. Yes, there are Sox fans, but the majority of Chicagoans could care less about the Sox.
Not that Sox fans should care. The team is doing great, and they don't need bandwagon jumpers to justify their fun. You've earned it, Sox fans, so enjoy it while it lasts. Which reminds me...
Last night brought back memories of two years ago. Not to go all Large Marge here, but after the Sox won, I turned to my buddy and said, “Two years ago, it was a night...just like this....” I was at a bar on the South Side and the place was hopping. (Yes, even in the shadow of U.S. Comiskular, the place was out of control with Cubs fever.) The Cubs, behind a wonderful Matt Clement performance, won game four to go up 3-1 on the Marlins. I was certain that the Cubs were going to the World Series for the first time in my lifetime. My dad's lifetime, too. There was simply no way the Cubs would lose three in a row behind Zambrano, Prior and Wood; with the last two games at Wrigley. Everyone knows what happened next, and I don't need to rehash that here. They crapped the bed, and in the process ripped my heart out and stomped it into oblivion. So take it all in stride, Sox fans. You're in an excellent position right now, but you haven't won anything yet.
