April 2004 - Posts

So the first rumor floating around was that the Bears were on the short list of ten teams interested in Kurt Warner. This morning's news is that Angelo and Co. are looking at Tim Couch! This could be a move to keep the 26 year old QB from going to Green Bay and finding that long lost rep he earned coming out of Kentucky. Can you imagine? Favre retires or takes mercy on us all by just sucking in his twilight years -- while they pick up Couch and groom him into another Bear killer. Now slow down cheese-heads, I'm not claiming Couch can be anything more than a “Danny Woeful” type QB. I'm just saying....it would suck if he got his act together and became the next in line to whoop us. Then again, if the Bears take Couch and convince him that 1 million dollars and a back-up job behind Grossman is the best he can do -- we'll at least sell more papers in this town. QB controversies are GREAT for the local media, especially when the team ends up 3-7 and you're praying for hockey of all things to start. Ugh.

Things have been busy here in the Chi as the weather has finally started to become “spring-like”. That, and the fact I was in Vegas with the fellas dropping some serious coin on blackjack and roulette last week! While on my little hiatus, the Bears drafted Tommy Harris out of Oklahoma. The big man is drawing comparissons to Warren Sapp. Or at least that's what I heard while watching the big board in the sports book last week. His stats aren't that fantastic at Oklahoma, but his website is a tad nicer than the new ChicagoBears.com redesign. Looks like the Bears contracted this new design out to a California web group -- what happened to hiring a local crew to handle the beloved Bears' website? A draft breakdown is obviously in order, so let me collect myself from a weekend of partying and get back to you in 5!

Aahh---back from the Easter Holiday. Lots of stuff to write about, but since I need to catch up at work, you will all have to wait. While you wait, I wanted to point out that today is the White Sox home opener. Good luck to Ozzy and the gang. I want to copy the great Hawk Harrelson's feature of “Pick to Click” here...so without any further delay:

Today's ChicagoSplogs.com Pick to Click is: Carlos Lee! Good luck 'Los.

It would be terribly easy to make fun of Ozzie Guillen and Kenny Williams this morning after a pretty embarrassing loss yesterday to the Royals. So, I will take  a pass, especially since I couldn't see the game on TV thanks to a little matter called a job. The Sports Center highlights were enough to fill me in for this report .”Boo-yaaa! Beltran goes yard!” -- or something to that effect. The good news is that Konerko seems to remember he is a pretty good hitter. The bad news, obviously, is that Ozzie has started our season off with ambiguity in the bullpen. Koch can't be happy that he isn't our closer. Ozzie can't be happy that a young, left handed Marte let him down yesterday. Shaken confidence anyone? A dose of “Here we go again”? This is NOT the way to start the season. I could easily see this loss sticking in the back of everyone's mind. A rough start is not something Ozzie and company can afford....

All hail the UCONN Huskies! For the first time in my young NCAA bracket-filling-out career, I picked the winner. Well, not counting the 10 years or so I pick Duke to win -- because they seem to win it that often. Those Duke picks don't count. But this UCONN pick does! Kudos to the entire UCONN family. (even former Bull Donyell Marshall -- who I saw standing behind this year's champs as they accepted the trophy) It is a tad early to award this week's “Strong Work” award, but I think it's obvious it goes to Emeka Okafor. Let us all hope the Chicago Bulls get that #1 pick, because this kid is the real deal. Make the trade, do what you have to do -- get this kid in a Bull's uniform. From the way they build his IQ up, give him the GM job as well. Just kidding Pax!
